Crane mobiles workshop with Refugee Action group

This week we started the session by introducing the Shelanu collections: Migrating Birds, Souvenir range and Interlocking Stories. We wanted to show the women the kind of things they could learn to make with us if they decide to join. Due to the processes it is not possible to make them in this workshop setting, although we will be exploring both jewellery and metal in the coming weeks.

For the making this week we focussed on origami. A couple of the group had done some before at school but not recently. We chose to create crane mobiles: mobiles; to decorate their new spaces with and cranes; because according to Japanese folklore, ‘Tsuru’ are a symbol of long life, happiness, good luck and peace.

There were some tricky moments getting the folding just right but everyone made a beautiful mobile and had a great time doing so!

“I’m very happy because I learnt something new.”

“I’m very happy.”

“Today it’s work great and am very, very happy.”
