Shelanu and Women’s Maker Movement project

We’re excited to be supporting the Women’s Maker Movement project!

Women’s Maker Movement is a new project produced by Craftspace. The two year programme will reach 90 women across three organisations in Birmingham, introducing them to making and business skills through various workshops.

Partnering with two community organisations, Go Woman! Alliance and Women of Worth, as well as Hope Projects Birmingham, the project aims to support women facing economic and social challenges to build confidence and learn new creative, business and social skills.

The first creative workshops of 2019 are led by Shelanu with the goal to create individual jewellery collections inspired by culture, identity and place.

To start the sessions the group went to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery to look for inspiration and ideas about form, pattern and texture.

We introduced the group to different making skills using Fimo (polymer clay). This included experimenting with transfer prints, exploring the millefiori technique and using translucent Fimo to capture different herbs and spices.

The group are working towards creating their own collections which will be presented to the public at a celebratory sharing event.

On the 5th March at Adderley Children’s Centre, a free community workshop will take place encouraging the public to make their own jewellery which will contribute to a larger art work to reflect the diversity of Birmingham.
